Spoiler alert: easing back in isn't the same as falling behind.
The September Pressure
Every year it's the same. The kids go back to school and suddenly everyone's timeline fills up with "back to business!" posts, fresh starts, new goals, full diaries, shiny new notebooks. There's an unspoken rule that September means switching straight back to full speed, exactly where you paused in July. And if you're not there yet, well then you're already behind before the month has properly started. Sorry.
I felt it myself this week. Inbox filling up, diary feels unwieldy, plans forming, a low hum of pressure to be instantly back at full capacity. Everybody has a new free challenge they want me to join and I am Not Ready. In Bloom Collective this week we landed on the perfect word for it: hangover. A September hangover, where you're still catching up on sleep, routine and headspace, but the world around you expects you back at full speed regardless. Nobody nurses a hangover by sprinting. You go gently. You rehydrate. You give it a day or two. So why do we expect anything different of ourselves in September?
September Can Be a Re-Entry, Not a Reset
September doesn’t have to be a hard reset button. It's a re-entry, and re-entry takes its own time. You've likely had a slower summer, different rhythms, less headspace for the business. Expecting yourself to snap straight back to full pace on the 1st of September is setting yourself up to feel like you're failing at something that was never actually possible. All while you’re most likely managing someone else’s new routine, snack requirements, fatigue and gigantic emotions.
Give yourself the staggered start you'd have after a late night or been “out out” with old friends. A period of easing back in isn't time wasted. It can be the difference between a sustainable return and being burnt out by October.
What Re-Entry Actually Looks Like
A slow start doesn't mean doing nothing. It means giving yourself space to think before you act. September has a funny habit of pulling you straight into to-do lists and hustle, when actually what you might need first is a bit of dreaming and planning. What do you actually want the next few months to look like? What would you do differently if you weren't rushing to prove you're "back"?
There's a real difference between planning and doing, and September often skips straight past the first one. Give yourself permission to sit with an idea before you act on it. To sketch out a plan before you launch into delivering it. The doing will still be there next week. The thinking is easy to lose if you don't make room for it now.
Something to Sit With
What have you not let yourself think about properly since the summer?
If you gave yourself a week to just get ready, what would that look and feel like?
Where are you rushing to "do" when you actually need to dream a bit first?
Which bits of your business are you really dreading get back into, and how could you honour that?
Permission to Ease In
September isn't a test you're already failing. It's a re-entry, and re-entries take a little time to find their feet. Ease back in the way you'd want your own kids to ease into a new school year. Slowly, with a bit of grace, and without needing to prove anything to anyone.
